Expanding Provision for the 2nd Gen

Updated: Aug 1

"You were called for this specific moment in time, to serve these students, in this school."

Never did our staff anticipate hearing these words from Dr. Janet Hinds, former career principal at Columbus' City Schools, who completed her doctoral work under groundbreaking author and educator Ruby K. Payne (see: A Framework for Understanding Poverty). Yet, God is full of surprises, and his provision often exceeds expectation.

Effective this school year, Dr. Hinds, who is also formally trained in spiritual direction through Renovaré, will be overseeing staff development at Harambee and serving as a mentor and guide to Founder & Principal, Alex Steinman. "In 28 years, I have never had a professional mentor in education. In this season, I am beyond grateful to call Dr. Hinds just that," shares Alex.

Dr. Hinds, whose own research and practice coaching teachers of students experiencing poverty, assured staff old and new alike: "We will help students experience a year's worth of growth for a year's worth of work. And I will stand by your side during every step of the journey. I will help you."

Since becoming an independent school, one of the most exciting ways we've experienced God's provision is through the calling of several gifted and qualified educators from the church of Columbus. In just a year's time, God has helped transform the spiritual landscape surrounding our school by extending bridges into several new faith communities around our city.

We look forward to seeing all the ways God works in and through our new staff. As we begin the school year, several have shared specific prayer requests that you can join us in praying on their behalf by reading our latest Prayer Circle update.

A Growing 2nd Gen

Second Gen Kindergarten takeover!
Second Gen Kindergarten takeover!

God's provision is right on time as our school welcomes a growing population of second-generation Harambee students!

In this year's Kindergarten class alone, three alumni have returned to enroll their own children. We feel both humbled by their return and privileged to walk alongside them in this new season of life. Seeing them become parents who prioritize an education with Jesus at the center is a treasure, and we look forward to the opportunity we have to surround their families with his love in this new season.

As Harambee approaches three decades of serving students, we are grateful for the opportunity God has blessed us with to make a multigenerational impact among families and communities.
